Lykins Update – January 30th, 2007
Dear Friends and family,
Carol and I are blessed to be a part of this YWAM family here in Salem, Oregon. I am hard pressed to create a new “update” for you this week. But I do have a prayer request for you.
My good friend, Keith Cedarleaf, age 60, has been diagnosed with Multiple Melanoma Cancer. The cancer is in his bones, kidney, and blood. He has chosen to combat it through diet, and alternative therapy. No chemo, or radiation. For those of you who don’t know Keith, he is married to Renee, and they have 6 children, ages 16 – 2 years. They are a wonderful family, active in church and boy scouts. Renee homeschools their children.
Carol and I visited Keith in the hospital in Eugene two weeks ago. He was upbeat, and confident of the Lord’s presence and purpose in their lives. Please join me in praying for healing, and for the comfort of the presence of God in their home and lives.
Carol and I will be speaking at Living Faith Fellowship in Klamath Falls, this next Sunday, Feb. 4th. We would appreciate your prayers for a clear message of hope and encouragement, and safety in travel.
Grace and peace to you,
Fred and Carol Lykins
I’ve included some YWAM information taken from their web site www.YWAM.org
For those of you with time to read on, Enjoy!
Statement of Faith
Youth With A Mission (YWAM) is an international movement of Christians from many denominations dedicated to presenting Jesus personally to this generation, to mobilizing as many as possible to help in this task, and to the training and equipping of believers for their part in fulfilling the Great Commission. As citizens of God’s kingdom, we are called to love, worship, and obey our Lord, to love and serve His Body, the Church, and to present the whole gospel for the whole person throughout the whole world.
We of Youth With A Mission believe that the Bible is God’s inspired and authoritative word, revealing that Jesus Christ is God’s son; that people are created in God’s image; that He created us to have eternal life through Jesus Christ; that although all people have sinned and come short of God’s glory, God has made salvation possible through the death on the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ; that repentance, faith, love and obedience are fitting responses to God’s initiative of grace towards us; that God desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth; and that the Holy Spirit’s power is demonstrated in and through us for the accomplishment of Christ’s last commandment, “…Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).
• What is YWAM? We are people of all ages, from over 149 nations. We are united in our common passion to know God and to make Him known.
We’re running over 400 outreach trips this year. We serve individuals and groups.
Our many ministries fit into three main categories: evangelism, training and mercy ministry. We are currently operating in more than 1000 locations in over 149 countries, with a staff of nearly 16,000.
“YWAM stands for Youth With A Mission. When I’m in conversation with people who are unfamiliar with YWAM, I like to actually use the whole name, ‘Youth With A Mission,’ because I love to see their reaction to those words used together. I think most people find those words just a little dangerous or perhaps exciting. Maybe they think it’s not such a good thing for youth to have ‘A Mission.’ And maybe it would be better if it were ‘People’ with a mission as ‘Youth’ are impulsive and hard to control. If they get a ‘Mission,’ why, they might just change everything! Exactly.”
- Tre Sheppard, YWAM staff in Harpenden, England
Some of the impact values and principles I have learned from YWAM include: seeking God and waiting until you hear before you move, interceding on a regular basis for the nations; tapping into the initiative of God moving through the two-thirds or majority world; setting worship at the heart of all ministry out-flow and giving a place to the ‘Holy Spirit and new-paradigm sensitivity’ with an out-flowing prophetic nature and appeal.”
Luis Bush, Former Director, AD 2000 and Beyond
“Thirty-five years ago I spent an entire night in prayer and discussion with Loren Cunningham. As he described his unique vision still in its infancy, I paused at one point and said, ‘Loren, if this happens it will change the world.’ How I rejoice that we now can look back and declare it has truly happenend–and it continues to happen. YWAM, to me, is one of the most significant evangelism strategies in the history of the Church. What an extraordinary work wrought by our extraordinary God!”
Dr. Dick Eastman, International President, Every Home for Christ
“YWAM provides a positive alternative for energetic young people. For some, the choice can be as clear and dramatic as rebellion versus submission. The danger and thrill of drugs, gangs and the street seduces them into rebellion from their parents’ world. However, YWAM offers similar excitement through an alternative means–submission to Jesus Christ. YWAMers love God and follow him with the same reckless abandon that characterized the first century disciples.”
Gregory Fritz, President, Caleb Project
“YWAM is a unique contribution to world mission. YWAM has been highly effective in attracting mission entrepreneurs, especially among young people, and mobilizing them for a wide range of important mission work. Sprawling, sometimes messy and very nimble, YWAM’s entrepreneurial spirit is the envy of the larger, more structured missions. YWAM’s dependence on the movement of the Spirit of God in directing its work is a witness to all of us.”
Bryant Myers, Vice-President, World Vision
“YWAMers don’t simply log miles. They travel with a purpose, often to the most difficult and needy places. No matter where I go in the world, YWAM is there–or at least within hiking distance. I know of no other organization so dedicated or intrepid. No place and no one is beyond the reach of this dedicated band. No less impressive is YWAM’s versatility. Like a multi-faceted gem, it is at once difficult to define and beautiful to behold. Mercy Ships, arts programs, book publishing, cutting-edge research, a university or two… What a program, what a legacy, what a God! And through it all, YWAM has never lost sight of the fact that good programs must follow good character. That is why I trust this ministry and am proud to have invested a decade of service with them. Any accomplishments I may realize in life are surely the outflow of their faithful nature.”
George K. Otis, Jr., President & CEO, The Sentinel Group
“Youth With A Mission’s versatility and creativity make it a reference point and pace setter in the world missionary movement. The inspiring story of how God has used YWAM to impact the world, training thousands of laborers and generating new missionary movements in every quarter, is surely one of the greatest testimonies in our era.”
Stephen L. Richardson, U.S. Director, Pioneers
