Lykins Update – July 9th, 2007
This update is already a week old! I’ve been waiting to add some photos, but we will have to wait! Thank you for loving us!
Dear Friends and Family,
Our Children of Destiny (COD) program has completed the fourth week! We have experienced God’s grace daily. We have 29 children from 4-15 years of age. This includes 8 Korean, and 2 Latvian. The Korean have a translator for those whose English needs help. The Latvian boys are 6 and 4, and unfortunately don’t understand very much English. All in all though we are having a good experience.
Initially, I, (Fred) intended to staff the Crossroads (CDTS) school, with Carol heading up the COD. However, as the time approached it became apparent that I was needed more in the COD than in the CDTS. I had some reservations about working in the children’s program. However, God has been so faithful to equip me with all I need. It is good to work side by side with Carol, and the children have been great! One of the boys, Niks, is quite a handful. However, God has given me a love for him, and now when he needs extra attention, I call his name, and he comes to me, plops into my lap…. and seems content to do so.
Our daily schedule is 8:30 school starts. Worship or intercession until 9:10. Teaching on various topics from 9:15 -10:45. (The visiting teacher takes the 4-6 yr group for 15 minutes, the 7-11 year group for about 30 minutes, then the 12-15 yr group for 45 minutes. While the group is in lecture, the other groups review, and have play time.) Snack is 10:45, games from 11-12:15. Lunch. 12:15-1:15. Workshops from 1:15-2:30. (Workshop is a presentation from several staff missionaries who are working with unreached people groups from China, Azerbaijan, North Korea, Sudan, and Myanmar, formerly Burma. The children are introduced to the cultures of these peoples, and learn how to pray for each country.) Acts of service (chores) ‘till 3:00, then off! Well, at least the children leave. We use this time to clean up the classroom, have staff meetings, and prepare for the next day. Dinner is at 5:15.
Carol and I moved from the apt we had been in since December. We were going to move to a home that the base had rented adjacent to the property. However, it had suffered some water damage and is just now ready to move into. Jesse and Yndira Reese, our base directors invited us to stay in their home, so this has been a good opportunity to get to know them better, and for them to get to know us better. They said that they like having us there, and have offered to let us stay until we leave on outreach in September.
Yes, I said outreach! Our Crossroads Discipleship Training School, (CDTS) has chosen to go the Philippines for the school outreach. Since there are 11 children in our COD who will be going on the outreach, Carol and I are especially needed! Some of the staff lived there for about 8 years, and have since traveled there many times. They know many small villages that don’t have a church and could use some encouragement, evangelism, and church planting. The area where we will be going is the same island that Manila is on, but about 6 hours north.
We had a couple from the last CDTS who spent a few months there this past spring. If you wish to read of their adventures, you could check out their blog, www.faithwithfeet.blogspot.com The dates they were in the Philippines are January 16 – May 31. They have several video clips as well as photos on their blog. (To see the selected dates, go to the bottom of the current page, and select the preferred dates.)
I hope you received the Wal-mart link with pictures of our class last week. Let me know if you didn’t receive it, and I’ll get it to you.
We are so thankful to God, and to you for allowing us this opportunity to share His love with missionary trainees, and their children. (future missionaries!) We are being stretched, and God has proven His faithfulness to us over and over. His mercies are new every morning!
We would especially appreciate your prayers for the duration of this school. We believe that Jesus desires to speak to each of these precious children, and we desire to be available for Him to speak through our words and actions.
Also, please pray with us regarding the raising of our outreach fees. Last year we saw God move through many different people to send us on the outreach to Alaska. This year’s outreach to the Philippines will be a larger step of faith! It is interesting how God’s call continually stretches us!
Please pray for us, that God would speak to those He has blessed and chosen to partner with us in this outreach financially. He knows who those individuals are… we don’t. To save the $6000 needed would be impossible for us, but with God all things are possible! We are looking to Him to perform another miracle on our behalf!
Thank you again for your love and prayers. We would not be here without your faithful prayers!
Blessings on you!
