Lykins Update – January 20th, 2008

Dear Friends and family,

This has been a wonderful, and challenging week. On Tuesday, we had Jim Stier, YWAM’s field director for the Americas for our weekly speaker. Here is a link to an article that he wrote.  http://www.ywam.org/articles/article.asp?AID=394  . We found him to be a challenging speaker with a fun delivery. Reminded me of  Larry Norman. One of the points that he made that stuck with me was the ease of being led by the Spirit. He said, “If you have an idea to help someone, it’s probably the Holy Spirit. The devil doesn’t want to help, our flesh doesn’t want to serve…. It’s probably the Holy Spirit.” It made sense! I had the perfect opportunity to serve the very next morning.

We were planning on visiting our good friend and CDTS student Cynthia Jordan who was suffering with cancer Wednesday morning, when we heard that she had passed away.

Cynthia was diagnosed with cancer last July. She took some treatments and went on the outreach with us to the Philippines. After the outreach she decided to stay in the Salem area. Theresa, the woman she was staying with needed some company and help going through Cynthia’s belongings. I didn’t think I was the most qualified, but I was available. We took her clothes and suitcases to a woman’s shelter, and boxed up her personal items to send to her mother in North Carolina. The Holy Spirit gave me compassion for Theresa, and also for Cynthia’s family. I prayed with each, and was amazed at how God allowed me to be his hands, feet and voice. The Traptow family’s website www.fullquiver8.com has a tribute to Cynthia if you would like to see it. She was 47.

Carol is busy with her hospitality chores and responsibilities. She and Amy are decorating the dining area with items from the 5 different “Omega Zones” that our base has adopted. These zones are China, (Amdo-Tibet) Azerbaijan, Sudan, North Korea, and Myanmar. By adopting, I mean that we target these peoples for prayer and outreach, believing that God has individuals in these nations who are waiting for someone to introduce them to Him.

Carol is also working with the English as a second language school coming up in March. She request prayer for time management, and also needs two additional teachers.

I have been remodeling the prayer chapel’s side rooms. They had been damaged by a leaky roof, so needed sheet rock repair and paint. I’ve also been working on our dining room addition. Our base is growing, so we have expanded the dining room, and are working on expanding the boys dorm. There is no shortage of work to be done! Does anyone have carpentry skills and time to donate? We would love to give you room and board in exchange for your labor!

Carol and I have an opportunity to visit with our daughter Rachael and her family in Colorado this next week. Please pray for safe travel as we will be flying into Denver, then driving 3 hours west, over the great divide, to New Castle. Rachael and her husband Pat were living in Portland while he attended Multnomah Bible College until September. Now they and their three children live there.

From time to time I request prayer for our daily needs. One tool that I have used is “Brush your teeth.” By that I mean that we are a busy people, and perhaps our prayer time is consumed with other issues. However, most people don’t pray while brushing their teeth, so I would request that when you brush your upper teeth, pray for our relationship with God. When you brush your lower teeth, pray for our relationships with other people. When you brush your tongue and rinse your mouth, pray that the words we speak would be life and sweet to the hearer. So please “Brush your teeth!”

We love and appreciate your friendship and prayers of support!

Grace and peace to you,
Fred and Carol
